Anxiety disorders and their symptoms
While living with anxiety can feel isolating and lonely, you’re not alone. An estimated 6.8 million adults in the United States have an anxiety disorder, but only about 43% of them get treatment.
Anxiety disorders cause persistent feelings of worry and fear as well as intrusive thoughts, even in calm, nonthreatening environments and situations. Anxiety can also cause physical symptom, such as:
- Headaches
- Muscle pain
- Stomach upset
- Physical shaking
These symptoms can be severe enough to interfere with your daily routine and quality of life and negatively affect your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Having an anxiety disorder can also increase your risk for panic attacks, sudden feelings of intense fear, racing heart, and chest pain. Many people with panic issues can feel like they can’t catch their breath or go to the hospital thinking they’re having a heart attack.
When to seek an anxiety screening
Because the symptoms of anxiety can be intense and affect your ability to make decisions, you might put off an anxiety screening out of embarrassment or confusion.
Our team recommends that you schedule an evaluation at InSynch Health if you have intrusive thoughts or anxious feelings for two weeks or longer.
Furthermore, based on recent findings by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, you should also undergo routine anxiety screenings if you’re age 65 or older. This is due to the significant increase in anxiety among older Americans, especially since the recent coronavirus pandemic.
The panel created such guidance to prevent anxiety and other mental health disorders from going untreated for years. The panel also created similar guidance in early 2022 for children and teens.
Types of anxiety treatments
As anxiety specialists, we understand the toll that an untreated anxiety disorder can have on a person. Some people with anxiety don’t realize how bad their symptoms actually are until they start treatment.
At InSynch Health, we offer several therapies that can help relieve symptoms and make anxiety and stress easier to manage. As part of your treatment, we might recommend one or more of the following treatments:
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of psychotherapy (talk therapy) that can help you identify negative thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviors. We give you tools that can help you cope with anxiety symptoms and change your negative thoughts and behaviors.
Exposure therapy
Exposure therapy involves gradual exposure to anxiety-inducing situations or conditions. This type of therapy can help desensitize you to anxious or fearful responses.
Relaxation techniques
There are a number of relaxation techniques that may help you stop anxious thoughts and worry less. For example, we might recommend meditation, breathing exercises, and deep muscle relaxation.
Medications
If other therapies aren’t enough to keep your anxiety under control, we may recommend prescription medications. Our providers can find the right medications and dosage based on a review of your health history and the severity of your symptoms.
